This week has been filled with great support for the Sierra County Humane Society, both from local businesses and from individuals. We thank St. Cloud Mining for not only donating some much needed kitty litter to our organization, but also delivering it directly to our sanctuary site. On a recent Tuesday, local resident Kristen dropped-off many animal items at the SCHS office building located at Desert Haven Animal Refuge. Thank-you, Kristen! When the sanctuary gates are closed, there is a donation box at the entrance to the property, for all who wish to bring in-kind contributions. Judy currently resides at Desert Haven RV Campground. She has volunteered to take on several painting projects, and the cheery and bright colors she is using are giving a new life to several of the signs throughout the Desert Haven property.

Recently, several members of the Desert Haven team spotted an injured and limping cat wandering on the property. Because of her injuries, we can only assume some unscrupulous person in a vehicle had dumped – thrown out of the vehicle – the helpless feline at the entrance of the property. The little one was obviously in distress. Patience and kindness were the key to finally trap her and bring her safely into the Howdy Room, the quarantine section of the Cool Cat Neighborhood. Safe in her new environment and gently cared for after her ordeal, she started to respond to our attention. At her first visit to our local veterinary clinic, her FIV text came back negative. Now vaccinated and sterilized, also medicated for her infected eyes and given an antibiotic shot, she is on her way to recovery.

Some people’s behavior toward animals is abhorrent. This steels our resolve to ensure that we at Desert Haven are here to help those we can help. We thank our supporters and monthly donors for helping us with the resources needed to get this little one and others like her saved from more suffering and certain death.
