This first week in 2021, the Sierra County Humane Society wishes to thank Courtney and Earl of San Francisco who recently sent our resident kittens and cats a wonderful Christmas gift filled with yummy food and treats. Several years ago, this kind couple came all the way from California to meet and adopt Elvis at Desert Haven, and, in honor of their beloved fur-boy, they have supported our no-kill sanctuary ever since. Our felines had a very Merry Christmas indeed. Thank-you, Courtney, Earl and Elvis!

We had a very special visitor at the sanctuary this first Tuesday of the new year. Her name is Sophia. A Senior at Chapel Hill University now, her involvement with us began when she was a four-year old little girl. While Sophia and her mom – Lorena – resided locally, Lorena became actively involved in our organization as an Advisory Board member. Every week, she also volunteered her available time at Paws & Claws Thrift Shoppe. She continued her involvement after they moved to NC some time later. Lorena cared about our work so deeply she made her daughter a Lifetime member when she was a preschooler, making little Sophia the youngest-ever Member of Sierra County Humane Society. Caring for the animals at Desert Haven has always been part of Sophia’s life. While growing up in NC, one of the sweetest ways she supported our sanctuary residents was to hold lemonade stands when friends of her mom held yard sales donating the profits to Desert Haven. Sophia’s visit this past Tuesday was very meaningful to her and to those who still remember the little girl from back then.

Once a year at around this time, we hold our Annual Membership Drive. In December, we mailed out our once-a-year Newsletter to our members and supporters. In it we shared the year’s events and highlighted our needs and wants for 2021. We invited current members to renew and non-members to become members, offering several levels of membership: Individual, Couple, Business, and Lifetime. Thank you to all of you who renewed your vote of confidence. If you are not already a Member, the time is NOW. We need your support. We would like to count you among the many like-minded animal-loving people who have renewed and established their membership with us over the years.
