After 32 years as a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to the welfare of the companion animals of Sierra County, the Sierra County Humane Society, which owns and operates Desert Haven Animal Refuge, remains steadfast in its aim to only take in new little ones as the resources are available to care for their needs. We rely on the kindness and generosity of animal-loving folks to help keep our operation financially solvent. Each little one that we adopt-out to the very best home possible for that specific little life – gives us the opportunity to rescue another companion animal who needs us. Sadly, so many of them do in this impoverished area of the Desert Southwest.

The opportunity arose very recently when the adoption of our sweet Dulce, an abandoned kitten we rescued from the City Shelter some months ago, was finally confirmed. Once we had found a loving home for Dulce, we took a trip to the City Shelter to rescue another kitty.  Amber, a darling older kitten, was brought to our attention. She so desperately wanted another chance at Life. Thanks to our loyal supporters and members who routinely contribute to our worthy cause, we knew we had the funds to take in Amber at the no-kill sanctuary. This would mean cover the costs of sterilization, needed set of vaccinations and take care of any other veterinary issues that may be found-out from the initial check-up at the local Vet’s clinic. And then of course, this meant we would commit to care for her as our own until she was adopted out. That same day, Amber became the newest resident of the Cool Cat Neighborhood at Desert Haven.

At Amber’s initial vet appointment, our local veterinary partner had a surprise for us: Amber was pregnant. The costs involved in sterilizing, vaccinating and caring for an unknown number of kittens immediately come to mind. Thanks to the on-going generosity of our animal loving friends, we were confident this unexpected hurdle could be crossed.  Stay tuned for news about Amber and her litter.
